About the Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra is based on numerous previous works in the field of kamashastra— the doctrine of kama, and, due to its completeness and systematicity, is considered by many to be the fundamental work in this field in Sanskrit literature. The author of the text is Vatsyayana. The full title of this work is "Vatsyayana kama sutra" ("Instruction on kama belonging to Vatsyayana"). It is believed that the author lived in the III—IV centuries A.D.
Vatsyayana himself was a silent ascetic. The ancient Kama Sutra was created during meditations in the sacred language of Sanskrit. Because of this, not everyone could understand her - you had to be an educated person to read. The first translations began to appear in the era of Victorian England. In the 18th century, the mood was very different: chastity and modesty were valued.

Not everyone could keep the book either. The general public didn't even always know about its existence! And if anyone knew, they kept it a secret — divulging the provisions of the Kama Sutra was punishable by prosecution. The "Kama Sutra Lessons" remained available only to the European Kama Shastra society until the 1960s.
The Kama Sutra is a book intended for aristocrats and courtesans. Hindus did not perceive eroticism as something mysterious and sublime. For them, first of all, physical pleasure was important. At the same time, it could be achieved not only through sex, but also through food and drinks. This means that the Hindus equated all earthly pleasures and sought to take the "maximum" from them.

But the religious approach remained the main thing. The Kama Sutra was not a book describing perversion. The art of the Kama Sutra was that it told about all kinds of relationships between people, about the manifestations of love of past generations and how to properly satisfy desires in order to purify consciousness and become spiritually purer. And frivolous sex was considered a sin.
