The history of BDSM
Part 1. BDSM as a phenomenon has its roots in ancient times. One of the earliest graphic evidence of sadomasochistic sexual scenes was found in an Etruscan tomb in Tuscany. Inside the Tomba della Fustigazione cave (6th century BC), two men are depicted whipping a woman with a stick and a hand during lovemaking. A number of erotic frescoes discovered during the excavations of Pompeii also contain elements of BDSM (a man spanking a woman with his hand, a woman in an imperious pose over a man, etc.). Sadomasochistic texts are also found in the Kama Sutra.: However, BDSM has been considered as a special form of sexual behavior only since the end of the 18th century, when the process of medical and legal categorization of sexual relations began in European countries. There have been references to brothels specializing in flogging since 1769. A little later, the works of the Marquis de Sade were published. In fact, de Sade's novels were the first literary works to contain a complete description of BDSM, including sadism as such. At the same time, despite the consolidation of concepts such as sadism and masochism in the medical literature, the ideas of Sacher-Masoch and, in particular, de Sade were very far from the modern subculture of BDSM, mainly in the basic principles of full information, safety and voluntariness. Sadism and masochism were considered by them as real-life situations, often implying completely non-playful torture and submission. In its modern form, BDSM originated at the turn of the 19th—20th centuries and was a development of erotic games with elements of domination and submission, practiced in European brothels, rather than the ideas of de Sade and Sacher-Masoch. The information is taken from open sources.
